See the human body like never before as the Milwaukee Public Museum presents Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS: The Original Exhibition of Real Human Bodies, the most highly attended touring exhibition in the world. From individual organs to whole bodies, BODY WORLDS offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the complexity of human anatomy and physiology. We have tickets for the 1:00 p.m. showing. You may spend as much or as little time in this exhibit that you like. You will tour this exhibit with audio headsets.
BODY WORLDS features authentic human specimens preserved through a revolutionary process called Plastination. This remarkable preservation technique replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics, thereby preserving human tissue in its natural state. Visitors who embark on this amazing journey below the skin’s surface will view an extensive collection including more than 200 authentic organs, systems and whole-body displays.
Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS exhibitions are the only anatomical exhibits that use donated bodies, willed by donors for the express purpose of serving BODY WORLDS’ mission to educate the public about health and anatomy. To date, more than 8,000 people have agreed to donate their bodies to BODY WORLDS for Plastination and use in the exhibits.
While at the museum we also have tickets to the IMAX for the showing of "The Human Body." We will see this presentation at 3:30 p.m., which lasts for 40 minutes. Three years in the making, "The Human Body" provides a dramatic picture of life—drawing on the most sophisticated medical imaging available and specially adapted to take advantage of the scope, power and detail made possible by the large screen format.
The result is a visually mesmerizing, visceral experience that plunges viewers right into the action. Follow a tomato on its journey through the biological blender of our stomachs, paddle underwater with infants whose mysterious diving reflex allows them to comfortably "swim," and accompany a red blood cell into the pumping chamber of the body’s engine room, the heart.
When we first arrive, there will be plenty of time before having lunch at noon in the Garden Gallery located at the museum, to explore many of the other exhibits. Your lunch in the Garden Gallery is included in the price of your ticket . We will have a gourmet box lunch, which includes a Roast Turkey Ciabatta Club sandwich, Deli Salad or Fresh Fruit Salad, Chocolate Chip Cookie, assortment of Soda, Bottled Water or Juice. If you finish your lunch early feel free to explore other areas of the museum, meeting just before 1:00 p.m. to enter the BODY WORLDS exhibit.
Even if you aren’t interested in the BODY WORLDS exhibit, please join us for a day at the Milwaukee Public Museum. There are so many exhibits to take in while we are there. Founded in 1882 and opened to the public in 1884, the MPM has three floors of exhibits that encompass life-size dioramas, walk-through villages, world cultures, dinosaurs, a rain forest and a live butterfly garden, as well as the Humphrey IMAX Dome Theater and the Daniel M. Soref Planetarium. The museum houses more than 4.5 million objects and hosts nearly half a million visitors each year. There is plenty of space for you to sit and take a break if you would like to do so. The cost for the day is the same even if you don’t see the BODY WORLDS exhibit.
Some of the permanent exhibits on display are listed below, with so many more.
Streets of Old Milwaukee
Visit Milwaukee around the turn-of-the-century, roughly the 1880s, to just prior to World War I. Buildings are represented at about three-quarters size or less. The streets are constructed from three different styles of paving: granite blocks originally from Buffalo Street, red bricks, and cedar blocks.
The Third Planet: The focus of the hall is the revolutionary concept of plate tectonics which makes the hall the first in North America to use this paradigm as a central theme for the presentation of earth science to the public. The exhibit, by virtue of its dynamic displays and of course, the dinosaurs, is a favorite among MPM visitors of all ages.
Puelicher Butterfly Wing: Transport yourself to a sensory wonderland. Stroll through a lush, tropical garden. Hear the murmur of a cascading waterfall and the soothing sounds of tranquil music. Watch as exotic butterflies emerge from their chrysalises and sip nectar right before your eyes.
The museum has wheelchairs available for our group’s use at no additional charge. If a wheelchair is preferred, please request this when making your reservation, and please make sure that you have someone with you to help you through the museum. All Public areas of the Museum are wheelchair accessible.
We will be leaving by 7:30 a.m. and arriving home around 8:30 p.m. We will make a 15 minute rest area break on the way down, and will be stopping for a fast food dinner break on the way home, at your own cost.
